Learn how to maximize SlashApply across all your job applications
Getting started: SlashApply has five core features that work together to fill job applications instantly. Whether you're using the dashboard to set up, the sidebar to save answers in real time, or the quick chip to fill pages with one click, this guide covers everything.
1. Slash Commands — Type // to Insert Answers
The fastest way to fill applications. Type // on any text input or rich-text editor (like LinkedIn messages, application forms, or email compose boxes) to see a menu of your saved templates.
How to use slash commands
- In the Dashboard: Navigate to "Snippets" or "Questions" to create new templates. Give each one a short trigger like
intro, cover, orwhy-us. - On any job site: Click into a text field, type
//intro, and press Enter to insert your saved introduction. - With the mini chip: Open the sidebar from the SA badge, then select and copy any snippet directly without typing the slash command.
Pro tips
- Use placeholders like
{{name}}or{{company}}in your templates — these will highlight for you to fill in manually if you haven't saved them as variables. - Create different triggers for different contexts:
intro-engfor engineers,intro-designfor designers, etc. - Mark your most-used templates as favorites in the dashboard for faster access.
2. One-Click Autofill — Fill Entire Pages Instantly
No need to type commands one by one. Click the lightning bolt ⚡ button in the sidebar to scan the entire page and automatically fill every field that matches your saved variables, profile information, and templates.
What gets filled automatically
- Full name, email, phone — from your profile or variables.
- LinkedIn, GitHub, portfolio links — saved in your variables section.
- Resume file uploads — attached to any file input field on the page.
- Yes/no or checkbox fields — based on common job-board patterns.
Setting up for success
- In the Dashboard, open "Profiles" and fill in all your details — these are the source for autofill.
- Add "Variables" like your portfolio URL, LinkedIn handle, etc. in the Variables section.
- Run autofill once you're on a job application page. It will show a toast with the number of fields filled.
Keyboard shortcut
- No keyboard shortcut needed — just click the ⚡ button in the sidebar or open the quick action bar at the top of the sidebar.
3. Resume Management — Upload, Preview, and Drag
Store and quickly attach your resume to any job application. Upload once, reuse everywhere.
Uploading a resume
- In the Dashboard: Navigate to "Resumes", then choose your active profile. Click "Add resume" to select a PDF or DOCX file from your computer.
- In the extension popup: Same process — go to "Resumes" tab and click the upload button.
- In the sidebar on any job site: Open the Resumes panel (when visible) and upload directly from there.
Using your resume
- Drag and drop: Open the sidebar, select a resume, and drag it directly onto any file upload field on a job site.
- Click to fill: In the Resumes panel, click the "Click to fill" button, then click any file upload field on the page to attach the resume.
- One-click autofill: Use the ⚡ button to fill all matching fields on the page, including resume uploads.
- Preview in a new tab: Click the "Preview" button in the Resumes sidebar section to view your resume in a new tab before sending.
Managing multiple resumes
- Upload different resumes for different roles (e.g., one for engineering, one for management).
- Use separate profiles to keep resumes organized by job search context.
- Click on a resume row to select it before using drag-and-drop or one-click actions.
4. Profiles & Variables — Organize Your Job Search
Keep separate sets of templates, variables, and resumes for different job search contexts. Switch between them instantly without losing any data.
Creating profiles
- In the Dashboard: Navigate to "Profiles" and click "New profile". Give it a name like "Engineering Roles", "Startup Search", or "Internships".
- Each profile has its own resume, templates, variables, and snippets — completely separate from other profiles.
- Select a profile by clicking on it. Your sidebar and all slash commands will now use that profile's data.
Using variables (placeholders)
- In the Dashboard Variables section: Click "Add variable" and enter a key like
name,email,portfolio, etc. - Use
{{portfolio}}or{{linkedin}}in your templates and answers to insert these values instantly. - Variables are profile-specific — create engineering-specific variables for your "Engineering Roles" profile and design-specific ones for your "Design Search" profile.
Why profiles matter
- Different roles need different answers. Keep them organized and instantly switch context without confusion.
- Separate resumes per profile so you're always sending the right resume with the right application.
- Variables like salary expectations or company focus can differ by profile — update once, use everywhere.
5. Snippets & Questions — Save Your Answers
Turn the answers you type over and over into reusable templates. One answer, saved once, used forever.
Creating snippets (for text fields)
- In the Dashboard: Navigate to "Snippets" and click "New snippet".
- Enter a short command (trigger) like
intro,why-your-company, oravailability. - Write or paste your full answer in the Template field. Use
{{variable}}placeholders for dynamic content. - Mark as "Favorite" if you use it often — it will appear at the top of your slash command menu.
Creating questions (for long-form answers)
- In the Dashboard: Navigate to "Questions" and click "New question".
- Enter a command like
cover-letterand write your full answer with any placeholders. - Questions are identical to snippets — the distinction is just for your own organization if you want to separate short answers from long-form essays.
Using templates with variables
- Write: "I'm interested in {{company}} because {{why}}, and I think I'd be a great fit for {{role}}."
- When you use this snippet, SlashApply will highlight the placeholders for you to fill in or replace with your saved variable values.
- Use the same command in every profile to reuse the template structure across different job searches.
Editing and deleting
- Click on any snippet or question to edit it. Your changes apply to all future uses.
- Delete a template by clicking the trash icon. Deleted templates cannot be recovered.

The Dashboard is where you set everything up. Access it by clicking the SlashApply icon in your Chrome toolbar and selecting "Options" or "Open dashboard".

9. Troubleshooting
Slash commands aren't showing up
- Make sure you've created snippets or questions in the dashboard.
- Check that you're typing in an input field or contenteditable element (some custom fields may not be supported).
- Try pressing
//in a different field to confirm the extension is working.
Autofill didn't fill all fields
- Some fields use custom formatting or are inside iframes that the extension can't access.
- Make sure you've filled in your profile information and variables in the dashboard.
- Try dragging your resume directly onto file upload fields if one-click autofill missed them.
Resume won't upload or preview
- Verify the file is a valid PDF or DOCX (not corrupted).
- Try re-uploading the resume in the dashboard and then use it again.
- Some sites use custom upload handlers that may not work with drag-and-drop.
Data is missing or reset
- Check if you're viewing a different profile. Each profile has its own data.
- Look in Settings → "Export data" to see a backup of everything saved.
- If you accidentally reset, use "Import data" to restore from a backup if you've saved one.
